Tax return in France

Navigating the French tax system can be challenging, particularly for expatriates, non-residents, and individuals with international sources of income. At French Tax Advisor, we provide comprehensive support with the preparation and filing of your French income tax return, ensuring that all income is declared : in compliance with current regulations and due time, avoiding double taxation by analysis of international tax treaties, with the most advantageous tax options.

French tax residency

Whether you are French or foreign, the French tax authorities may consider you a French tax resident if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Your main home is in France and you spend most of the year in France
  • You carry out your main professional activity in France
  • Your main economic interests are located in France

As a French tax resident, you are required to declare your worldwide income in France, including both French-source income and income received from abroad.

The applicable tax treaty between France and the country from which your income originates will determine how double taxation is avoided.

We analyse the relevant tax treaty on your behalf and ensure the correct rules are applied to your situation.

Non resident taxation

Non-residents are taxable in France only on income arising from French sources, subject to the provisions of applicable tax treaties.

Examples of taxable French-source income include:

  • Rental income from real estate located in France
  • Income from business or professional activities carried out in France (whether as an employee or self-employed)
  • Salaries relating to work performed in France
  • Dividends from French companies, interest, and other investment income arising in France
  • Pensions and retirement income where the paying institution or debtor is based in France
  • Capital gains from the sale of French real estate

We help non-residents determine whether French tax applies and ensure full compliance with French filing obligations.
